CPR

This year, we had the opportunity to teach CPR to some of the healthcare providers in Haiti. Homayon and Sharon are certified instructors through the American Heart Association. Even though the class was modified a bit for the situation (they didn't teach the AED section,) they did cover the guidelines for adult, child, and infant CPR as well as choking. Many questions were asked and answered. The providers each did practice with the mannequins until they were comfortable with the training. And they did a great job! Education is the key to improving the future, and we believe that these providers are now more comfortable with these skills, should the need arise.
Of course, this class would not have been possible without our translator Pierre. He listened to what was said, translated into Haitian, and than repeated back all questions. He sure did double duty! The mannequins were provided by International Medical Aid.

Sharon assists one of the providers to learn the correct
rate to do compressions.

Sharon gives a part of the lecture, while Homayon
prepares to demonstrate.

Pierre asks a question, so he can better translate the information.

Proper hand placement is very important. Here Sharon helps the provider find the correct location to place her hands for compressions.

The providers listen as Pierre translates some of the lesson.
After a few tries, they were able to demonstrate the correct steps
to perform CPR.

The mannequin was cleaned between providers. Here Homayon performs this task. Cleaning helps to prevent the spread of germs and disease.

It looks like everyone wanted to learn these life-saving techniques.
The mannequins were very nice to work with. The infant mannequin
was larger than most Haitian infants.

And yes, we cleaned this mannequin before using it.
